Managing Different Expectations in the Classroom

“Fairness means that everyone receives what he or she needs. Fairness does not mean that everyone receives the same.”    Lavoie 1989

The above quote would obviously go above the heads of many young students in a classroom setting, so how do you respond to your students when they make comments in relation to the students with disabilities? Here are some ideas….

  1. Acknowledge that the students with disabilities are different – or may be using different equipment, or doing different work, or may be getting more help than others.
  2. State that we are all different – and have individual strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Ask students to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses.
  4. Build your students’ capacity for empathy towards others and ways that they may be able to accept, support and even celebrate each other’s differences in their classroom.
